A) How to Reduce Cat 3, Cat5, Cat 5e, Cat 5E, Cat 6, Cat 7 Copper Cable Infrastructure Installation Costs?

Data/voice copper cable installation cost (TM&E) may varies from $65.00 to $340.00 per drop (CapEx). The overall cost depends on the life cycle of the cable and its ability to deliver high bandwidth from 100 Mbps to 1Gbps to the desk top device (OpEx).


The Price You Pay Depends on Many Factors Such As:

#1-  Installer Experience on how to pull the least amount of cable and (shortest run)
#2-  Installer adhering to national and local code (i.e.  suspension at a maximum of five (5) foot intervals)
#3- Cable Category (Cat 3 , Cat5, Cat 5e, Cat 5E, Cat6, Cat7)
#4-  Cable Type (Plenum or non-plenum)
#5-  Cable Length (Office Vs. warehouse)
#6-  Manufacture of Cable, jacks and patch panel

B) How to reduce the cost .

Price you pay for a drop copper infrastructure cable depends on the knowledge and experience of project owner / manager and how much useful information is provided to local cable installer. This is what we recommend.

#1- Call your local city building inspector office and ask what type of data cable  cable ( Plenum or non- plenum ) they recommend that would pass the inspection. Non- plenum is less expensive. Passing inspection means you can pull occupancy permit which helps your insurance and your city business license )

#2- Determine where will be your IDF  or MDF. This means location of end of your cable runs . You need to mark your floor plan ( Furniture and equipment drawing )  with location where you will be placing your server and switches . This will determine where cable puller will terminate one end of the cables on patch panels.

#3- Determine the cable, patch panel, jacks  manufacturers (i.e. Panduit , leviton  , General cable). Try to stay out of no brand offshore material with UL tag and standard. We recommend Panduit and Panduit certified cables due to its look, quality and durability.



#4- From location ( IDF )  measure the longest and shortest runs. This is done by simply walking and measuring the distance between IDF and closest  office or cubical and farthest one. Typically,  this is about 150 feet ( EIA TIA standard is not to exceed 300 feet per run )

#5- Determine the number of cable in each drop ( 1 cable per  drop or 2 cables per  drop ). If you  have a full Voice over IP  ( VOIP )  office technology you may need only one cable per station and for redundancy  you may  offer a WIFI  access. Expert local  cabler and standard recommend  two (2 )  cables per  drop

#6- Contact a local installation expert  and provide him with
  • A marked floor plan ( your cable locations for PC, phone, fax , printers, AP unites , surveillance camera ….etc. )
  • Your information gathered from item B1,2,3,4 contact a local installation expert . The local expert can save you



#7- If you have a furniture team installing your office  furniture , make sure you obtain a copy of furniture installation project plan and furniture installation project manager name and cell number and make it available to your local  cable installation  project manager. They should contact each other .

#8- Draft a short project plan with start date and end date . Start date is the day you want the cable to start pulling cables which is well before ceiling closer date ( inspection ) , cable lasing date which start after furniture farm installation date and finally end date which is the day you wand marked floor plan and test results .

#9- Ask your local  cable installation  project manager for a written quote that  covers:
  • Project total pricing that contains Jack ( Rj45 ) , Cable and patch panel
  • Unit  cable pricing ( if you add a drop or subtract a cable during project install +/ -  ) . this will help you with change control. Unit pricing for   one ( 1 ) cable per drop and  two  ( 2 ) cables per drop
  • Bear in mind two cables per drop should be less expensive than multiplying one ( 1 ) cable per drop by two (2 ),  since  two cables per drop require 2 times more cable but one pull ( labor to pull )
  • Unit labor rate ( tech per hour )
  • Conduit and sleeves unit installation rate . A four (4) inch conduit is usually required to transition  the cable from the ceiling  to the IDF room
  • Pricing for  a 7’X19” rack and its associated  ladder rack  or just simply a wall mounted patch panel  .
  • Warranty and 1st day of operation support
  • Post installation documents ( marked floor plan and test results )
  • Copy of liability insurance with Additional insured  


#10- If number of  cables is above 100 drops per floor and more than a total of 300 per building , then seriously consider passive optical LAN technology . This will drop the cost by at least 45% in capital Expense( CapEx )  and  60 % more in operating expense OpEx )   





#9- If number of drops is more than 500, please contact us to get a copy of a installation contract since you should not sign local installer contract , they should sign yours .
